last week what we did was what discussion outside under a sunny fine weather.
it was very very nice
hope we can do that again sometime
and we had out PWT on fallacies
idk if i did good or bad i just guessed most of them
and in ILC it was a time for us to do an essay
i had problems wiht my topic and couldnt do anything but now i got some idea
im not sure if i will make it in time but ill try my best

yesterday, we did a discussion on hemingway
how he is a hunter and also conservanist(how do u spell it!?)
it settle down to the topic about why we eat meat and all those food stuff
i wanted to watch that movie that Rab mentioned
gotta find it on the freedocumentary.com?

and today, we did how hemingway puts his view on politics through the old man and the sea
it was pretty difficult since i have not much sources about history lol
interest thing was that hemingway went to many places during war time
there must be some kind of effect on his writing

we are now in june and things are going fast for me
i totally did not remember the PWT test this week friday
hope i would get a better grade this time since last PWT wasnt so well
i couldnt really see what was good and bad since some people got really good score and some didnt
what kind of essay paragraph would get a high score
i learned it is important to link examples to the introduction again but i thought that is just a waste on time to write
it already explains what the paragraph is going to be about in the intro and why again have to write it next to examples
i would like to have lesson on my writing some time.

in pc room i tried to search about chinas dna testing but since china is so not open
i wasnt able to find info directly
i guess taking a survey was a good idea for this topic

todays the last day of may
time flies huh
we only got few weeks till the first term ends

well todays class rab told us that there were many PWT tests that had a score too low or too high
bet mines one of em lol
then had a discussion
when we thought of what we want from japan
many of us couldnt say much
why? are we fulfilled with this society?
im not but i dont know what i want
this may be a problem for many people who have the right to vote
when saori said is it irresponsible to vote without knowledge or not to vote anyways
i thoght voting without knowledge is more irresponsible but maybe many people do not know much idea of what they expect from the government

end of class was a time for students to tell everyone what they are goint to write on their essay
i guess my topic doesnt relate to anyones
if there is then plz tell me cuz im not aware of it lol

so today rab couldnt come to class
a guy name sylvan, was it? forgot how to spell his name, came to place rab
thank you for coming!
anyway, in his class we mainly watched a US election ad commercials
it was very very interesting
what we read in birk were exactly shown in the commercial
there were many many selecting, slanted and charged languages
each pic had many messages that would attack obama or mccain in direct and indirect way
what was most interesting was in obamas commercial attacking mccain
it said mccain cannot use computer nor can he send emails
but that is because mccain was taken hostage during vietnam war for 5 years and were tortured
broke his arms and fingers
so now he cannot use his hands well
but because many people doesnt know this fact, by watching that commercial many would think that mccain is out-of-date, cannot adapt to new things

it is important to be critical, but without knowing a back story it may be impossbile to point out those biases

i messed up a lot didnt think of much to say
just because i was SLEEPING just before the class and my brain was not working as it should have been.......
but im the best student in CB
why? its simple
first, even though i sit like a dummy
i listen to class
dont sleep

not all the time but many times!
second, rab likes or even loves technology especially mac
well, i own three mac technological items
imac, mac book pro, and iphone
i used to own windows but changed it not because of rab but because it is more useful
to prove it, i changed my pc from mac before entering ICU
third, i gain a lot from this class
and thats what students have to do
obtain something from a class
i do that even thought you cannot actually see it
so therefore im the best in CB, no, best in program C!!hahahahah!

i got used to some pics and were almost able to see SOMETHING but not clear
all of this was about perceptions
how ppl look at things in differnet ways

i just saw a news about relocation of US military bases
prime minister hatoyama said during the election that he would relocate the base at least outside okinawa
then today, he went to okinawa and said it cannot be moved from okinawa and needs to be relocated on henoko
then i saw a demo!!! a little one lol
it was soo small that i dont think it would have much effect
what i thought was weird was that people in okinawa cities commented on the news that they were furious and angry about this relocation but they were not at the demo
and people to were at the demo were mostly elders, no students
myb i just didnt see them on the news......?
anyway, there was a demo in japan
but it was small
not like the one in seattle
no students
i think the news is showing it fairly about this news
i would like to know what kind of bias there is if it has a bias

wow today rab got pissed!!!lol
i was laughing when he was pissed off saying stuff against us
i didnt see or realized that he had winked to some others but i kinda knew he wasnt pissed
if he seriously was then i would be pissed too!lol
since he said he wouldnt check our essay till 8 pm today

the short psycological test wasnt as accurate as yesterdays from my opinion
the reason idk just feels like it aint accurate lol

as a ELP class we discussed Barna
didnt remember much detail about it but managed to do discussion
when rab said which is the one to cause a problem or something like that
i was confused. what kind of problem??? a major problem that would piss off the other and get killed or minor problem that would be embarrassing
for the former i chose the nonverbal
latter i chose language and stereotype

last week was sooooo busy that i could do much study


we had a retreat
gone to chino, nagano up in the mountain.
there were about 160 members that worked for this retreat and i was the top. hahahaha
but almost nobody knew that i was the chairperson of the retreat!!!
there were so much problems between student service group and APC but we managed to go through it and succeeded the retreat

i had a chance to speak infront of every student of 14 in the opening and ending ceremony
i got so nervous for the opening
i knew i had to say something but didnt think of anything and just did it
idk how bad or good i was
how was i?lol
the ending i thoght i didnt have to say anything so i was sleeping with other students
then minamisan (student serveice group leader?) woke me up and told me to say something
i was like WTF i didnt know that
im not ready.....
the next min. i was on a stage
dont remember what i said but i wasnt nervous at all, instead relaxed
idk why, myb because i was sleeping just before i got on the stage
anyway what i wanted to say was i had a good experience

today, me, trd, fumika, n yumi had a golf practice at 8:45 so early in the morning!!!
then on the third period, i did muscle training and now my arms dont move as i want them to move....

in class i was so tired from the training i was nodding during class
but i remember what we did in class!!!

then class finished and had nothing to do so i went to the traning room again
unfortunately caught by a senior and had to do another training on my legs this time
luckly i had a tutorial with rab so i was able to getout and see him
got some ideas how to fix my essay but idk if theres any time

well then i slept during health and recovered my energy a little
and went to work for retreat stuff
finished my job so i ran out and went to eat YAKINIKUUUU
it was hilarious!!!! love ppl in CB LOL

dont forget the retreat is day after tomorrow!!!

Today there was a lady from monbu-kagakusyou since our class is super duper smart in finding assumptions!
the print rab gave us was so easy to spot the assumptions that i didnt say anything while everybody was discussing it...... jk!!!
how the heck could i find assumtion if i had no knowledge about saudi arabia!!!
some were very easy but most i couldnt get

the shaving one was very interesting since i hav a friend who has lived in italy for few years
she was shaved when i was in same class as her in HS so myb she adopt and adapt in each culture.
i think it isnt that hard for grls not to shave when in italy myb not i just thoght it mite not be that hard to adapt
im all ok with grls who has hair on their legs If the other parts are very beautiful lol


i would like to visit italy again some time later in my life and check the legs of women

Today I forgot my folder at science hall? which had tomoakis PWT practice test in it
fortunately there was no class held and the folder was still at my seat

i read tomoakis and realized how little knowledge i have!!!

Chap:6 Is The WOrld Made Up Of Nouns or Verbs?

im very curious why nisbett gives such a long example of china and support its idea, than instantly kills it with few lines saying about greeks. it would be a lot better if he gives both the same amount of explanation and then give his idea of which is superior
because i didnt really understand the part saying
a focus on the one-way, individual-class organization of knowledge encourages induction from the single case; a part-whole representation does not.
i want more explantion for this "part-whole representation does not"

asian see things in relations with other things and westerns see through static objects that can be grouped into categories.
language or words differ because of these kind of ideas like it mentioned in the previous chapter.
chapter by chapter for me it seems like this book is becoming more equal towards asians and westerners myb just because he mentions about many different countries.

Chap:5 "The Bad Seed" or "The Other Boys Made Him Do It"?

examples on news given in this chapter was very interesting.
chinese news focus on the environment the murderer was in
on the other hand new york times american news focus on ones characteristics.

looking at japanese news
myb because japan is part of asia
the news in japan is mainly based on the environment of a criminal or someone who is in the news.
do you guys remember the killer in akihabara?
myb im talking about somethig different...but
this guy was so alone that he started to post his message on his blogs
he had no friend nor did he had a satisfying job
then he when to kill few people in the town just because he was unsatisfied with his life
its kind of different example from the one in the book but
what i wanted to say was that the news in japan showed about his surroundings a lot
if my memories are still correct.

in avoiding the fundamental attribution error
the example of the college student being asked to show possible donors around the campous for a day and that for this service the student is offered a money
one refuses and other accepts this
then as the book mentions, it seems that it is more likely for the latter students to go blood driving than the former
but the answer they gave were due to the amount of money they would be paid
but still it may look like the latter were t¥likely to go blood driving
i felt that this is like an assumption that we covered in class when writing a essay

Chap:4 "Eyes In Back of Your Head" or " Keep Your Eye on the Ball"?

beginning of chapter four he mentions the example of pyramid made of cork and say this is a "dax". then show two trays, one with pyramid made by plastic and anotehr a piece of cork.
americans choose the same shapre as the "dax" and japanese choose the other but for me i would choose the pyramid
maybe because i lived in us or mybe because im not in the same situation as this book says.
i would like to know what would CB students choose.


the respondents thought of a company as a system to organie tasks or as an organism coordinating poeple working together.
what i thought here was that "both" could be an answer. company is desined to perform functions and tasks in an eddicient way and a group of working people working together.
this two choices seem to be odd to me since A mentions about salary in the end but B doesnt mention about it.
i think most americans chose A since A says "they are paid for the tasks they perform."
and on stability or change part, nisbett says he worked with Li-jun JI, from Michigan and Yanji Su from Beijing univ. and studied chinese and american beliefs about change but why did he choose those two? They are definitely from asia by looking at the names. to be fair shouldnt he be choosing one from china and one from america? myb it doesnt matter much but i just had to wonder.

see world through a wide-angle lens and see objects in contexts, or focus primarily on the oject adn its properties which one are your view toward the world.

Chap:3 Living Toether VS. Going It Alone

In this chapter Nisbett discuss the difference in many countries.
he gives many different kind of examples to support his idea such as first line of the book, the first person words, direct and indirect way of telling thoughts, and how babies sleep.
there are more but dont remember all.
anyway, i did agree with nisbett on this chapter.
maybe because he mentioned about people who lived in and outside one countries.
two things i didnt understand was why does he give only two ideas, westerners, and asians when he says that there are various kinds of people and various kinds of countries in the end.
another thing is if americans are wanting to be different from others and choose the color that is most uncommon, then would it result in everybody choosing the same color anyways??
this chapter was intereserting since it gives many examples including japanese people.

it felt like it had been a long time since we last had had our ELP class.
we watched a video of the real situation of demo happened in Seattle
because it had such an impact on me i couldnt say anything when we gathered in groups to discuss.
what media shows arent the real truth
so what news can we believe now?
we all hav to become critical to every news and gather info from local or small media
not just from one way but from many ways

n why do not japanese do demo???
i really dont know
dont really care about other people myb

why didnt we even know that there was huge demos all over the world?
is it because the gov in japan pressures many japanese news not to show those kinds of demos?
then it was such an success in japan since non of us in CB didnt know about it.
moreover there is this tendency that japanese people take every news for granted.
so i guess it would be really really easy to eliminate or change what has really happened in this world.

Today's class, we did a worksheet on essay writing.
When we did the ordering of a paragraph I got the second one wrong!!!

Because Rab gave us a practice, his expectation of our essay is going to increase!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO

Topic sentences must have a topic and controlling idea
Supporting sentences cannot go off topic and contradict or it would be a crappy paragraph!



The classroom was so hot that I got really sleepy......

I managed to live through the class but it is not good to make the room hot

Chap:2 The Social origin of Mind

Chapter 2 is like the continuation of chapter 1. Maybe every chapter is the extension of chapter 1.
Well, I couldn't keep my concentration for more than 5 minutes on this book so it took me such a long time to finish it.
In chapter 2, it seems more obvious to me that Nisbett thinks HE is superior to Eastern.
He talks about the ecology's effect on different ideas of Chinese and Greeks. His main idea of difference between Chinese and Greeks is the curiosity. Greeks have and Chinese doesn't, ike it says on page 40, last paragraph. What I did not like was the last paragraph on page 41.

Anyway, I do not have much to say on this chapter. Its mostly biased I think.
Let's hope to see some opinions that are not biased.

Chap:1 The Syllogism and The Tao

First I did the Three B's that Rab told us to do.
I couldn't get much idea of Richard E. Nisbett or his bias so I just started reading his book.
Starting with the introduction, he said he was influenced by a brilliant student from China.
So I thought Nisbett may support more on Chinese culture of life shared within a harmonious social network than Greeks individuality.
But what I found was different. Although he puts many good examples for each East and West, II felt that the words Nisbett use has a bias.
Do you guys remember the video that Rab showed us the other day? About BBC news using kidnap.
In chapter 1, I found Nisbett is using "lack of" and "failure" for Chinese and never used that kind of word for the Greeks.
Or did I just miss those kinds of words for the Greeks?

I got the point that Chinese (Asians) and Greeks(Westerners) have a different way of thinking because of its culture. They both have good and bad points but what I liked was the ancient Chinese story about an old farmer whose only horse ran away.



The bottom line is, this book makes me very sleepy....zzzZZZ
Gotta read chapter 2!!!

Today, Rab told us the main idea of how to write an essay.
It was very very interesting that we could write almost anything on a title for Rab's essay!

I had the basic idea of 5 paragraph essay but had never heard of short and long title.
I said that I will be writing about the world cup taking in South Africa this year and the education in South Africa.

I have to think of a title that will get the attention of readers.
Think of an interesting introduction and thesis statement.
Body paragraphs with topic sentence, rules of three, and if needed conclusion.
I got the basic idea of how to write but I don't think it would be as easy as Rab explained to us.


Let's hope that I could make up a title as interesting as As*ho*e Aso.

Worried if he knows all the classes we have.

Anyway, I learned that choosing essay topic is hard.
Assumption and sensitivity were the two key word to think about when choosing research question. I do not really know if my question is fine.
I have not perfectly decided what I am going to write about.

I had no idea writing an essay is this hard!
I got to start working on it, or else.........

4/19 Essay....

Today, we discussed about college as a "subversive" institution in Meiland.
Rab talked about the demo that took place in 80 or more major cities in 2003.
Most of the classmates did not know about this demo, while most of the people who joined the demo outside Japan were mostly students. I was disappointed in this because I was able to see it clearly that Japanese people does not care much about other countries and war.
What makes such a difference? Maybe the education in Japan has effected us. We do not speak up in class, nor do we ask question. We do not have much opportunities to think during class. All we do is to memorize facts. I was glad that I came to ICU, since most of the ICU teachers challenges us and makes us think.

Rab gave us an assignment. We now have to write a essay in two weeks or so.
He told us to think of the research question first. Do the thesis statement later, since thesis statement is the answer to the research question.
What I heard from Rab were mostly new to me and interesting.
I have to think of the topic for essay now!!!
Any good ideas? LoL

In the ELP yesterday, we posted a video of ourselves.
Posting myself on a blog was seriously embarrassing!!! But it would be such a fun to watch other people's video post.

I have used web-camera when doing Skype, but I have never posted myself on the blog.
I did not know how either.

As Rab said, it may be lot easier just to take a video and post what you wanted to share with everyone on the blog than typing out everything.
IF you are good at speaking. lol

What I learned in the class was the importance of information.
It is not about the amount of information you put into ones essay or paragraph, but it is about choosing information that is really needed.

And we saw a video of a man doing crazy bike tricks. That was super cool. I wish I could do that too!!!

I wish our classes were all in computer room!
